U.S. Health officials make case for $1.8 billion in emergency Zika funding

WASHINGTON — Top U.S. health officials told Senate panels Thursday that $1.8 billion in emergency funding is urgently needed to help protect pregnant women from the Zika virus that has been strongly linked to the microcephaly birth defect that causes abnormally small heads and incomplete brain development.
Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, urged lawmakers to approve new funding for Zika prevention rather than taking the money away from efforts to fight Ebola, which has been contained after the massive outbreak in West Africa in 2014 but has not been eliminated.

Republican congressional leaders are pushing for the Obama administration to use existing Ebola funds to combat Zika rather than asking for a new pot of money. However, Frieden made it clear Thursday that he believes that’s a risky idea.
“Ebola isn’t over,” Frieden told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that funds health programs. He said CDC officials around the world performed 10,000 tests for Ebola last month alone.
“We risk letting down our guard on Ebola (if the funds are diverted to Zika),” Frieden said. “The Ebola dollars that are not spent are all allocated for activities that we consider critical.”
